Don’t Leave Them a Mess

Why this book

Empires rarely fall to outsiders. They fall at the handover.

On our channel we have watched ranch dynasties, family companies and whole towns come apart, and it is rarely the drought or the competitor that does it. It is the day after: nobody talked, the papers were missing, the will surprised everyone, and the family fought over the house.

Your family doesn’t need a ranch for that to happen. A house, a few accounts, a cabin, a drawer of keys and a lifetime of things are enough. This book is the plan, in four weekends: the binder, the papers, the talk, and the house and its things. It gives you the words for the hard conversations and the questions to bring your attorney, and the binder pages are there to fill in.

It is for you if

  • you’ve built something (a home, savings, land, a small business, a family) and want it to outlast you without splitting the family
  • you once had to settle a parent’s estate and swore your kids wouldn’t go through that
  • your own parents won’t talk about it, and you need a way in

It is not for you if

  • you want legal advice for your own case: this is general information for the United States, and it tells you when to see an attorney
  • you need a printed book: this is a PDF ebook (the binder pages are made to print)
Weekend OneThe binder: where everything is, including your digital life.
Weekend TwoThe papers: wills, trusts, beneficiary forms, and who speaks for you.
Weekend ThreeThe talk: the family meeting, and what “fair” means in your family.
Weekend FourThe house, the things, the business or farm, and your stories.
What’s inside

Every chapter, one job

Each chapter opens with a short true story or an everyday scene, then gives you the work, with four kinds of boxes: Do this weekend, Say it like this, Ask your attorney and Watch out. Tap a chapter to see what’s in it.

Part One · Why Families Break
Chapter 1The Day After

What a family actually faces in the first hours, days and weeks after a death or a sudden illness, question by question.

Chapter 2Six Ways It Goes Wrong

Silence, missing papers, the house, the “unfair” will, the second marriage and the stuff: how each starts small, and the one thing that stops it.

Part Two · The Four Weekends
Chapter 3Weekend One: The Binder

Build the “if I’m gone tomorrow” binder, tab by tab: your people, accounts, bills, insurance, deeds, keys, and where the originals are.

Chapter 4The Digital Drawer

Phones, passcodes, email, photos in the cloud, autopay and online accounts: what to set up now, and what never to write down.

Chapter 5Weekend Two: The Papers, in Plain Words

Wills, living trusts, beneficiary forms, probate and joint ownership explained simply, the mistakes that override a will, and the questions to bring your attorney.

Chapter 6If You Can’t Speak for Yourself

Powers of attorney, the health-care agent, the living will and the HIPAA release: who decides for you, and how to choose them.

Chapter 7Weekend Three: The Talk

The family meeting: who to invite, a written agenda, the opening lines, and the sibling who won’t come or the spouse who won’t talk.

Chapter 8Fair Isn’t Always Equal

The caregiver child, money already given, the child in trouble, stepchildren and second marriages, and explaining your choices in your own words.

Chapter 9Weekend Four: The House, the Cabin, the Land

Keep, sell or share: why shared houses start fights, and how a simple shared-place agreement prevents them.

Chapter 10The Things

Heirlooms without fights: asking who wants what, the take-turns pick, the story behind each piece, and what grown children actually want.

Chapter 11The Business or the Farm

Owning versus running, the heir who isn’t ready, buy-sell agreements, and a written succession plan.

Chapter 12Your Stories

Recording the stories, labeling the photos, the recipe box, a letter of wishes, and the funeral you want.

Part Three · If You’re the Heir
Chapter 13When It’s Your Parents

Raising it with parents who won’t talk, spotting scams aimed at them, and the executor’s first 30 days.

Chapter 14Keep It Current

The 30-minute yearly review, and the life events that mean an update, so the plan never goes stale.

Part Four · The Binder
WorksheetsBinder pages

27 fill-in pages: your people and advisers, accounts, insurance, bills, property, digital accounts, health and funeral wishes, the heirloom list, the family meeting agenda, questions for your attorney, the executor’s 30-day checklist and the yearly review.

Questions before buying

Good to know

What format is it?

A PDF with 6 × 9 inch pages, 179 pages, about 35,000 words. It opens in any PDF reader, in Apple Books, and in the Kindle app (through Amazon’s Send to Kindle).

Can I print the binder pages?

Yes. The worksheets in Part Four are made to print on ordinary paper and fill in with a pencil, and you may print them as often as your own family needs.

Is this legal advice?

No. It is general information for the United States, in plain words. Laws differ by state, and the book says where they do and when you need an estate-planning attorney, an elder-law attorney or a CPA. It makes that meeting shorter and better, because you walk in knowing what you have and what you want.

What does it have that the videos don’t?

Our videos show how families and fortunes come apart. This book is about yours: the binder, the paperwork in plain words, the family meeting with the words to use, the house and the heirlooms, and the pages to fill in.

My parents won’t talk about this. Will it help?

Part Three is written for you: how to bring it up without taking over, what to watch for, and what to do in the first 30 days if the day has already come.

Who made it?

The team behind the Shuttered Works channel, which makes long documentaries about American companies, towns and family fortunes. Every fact, figure and law in the book was checked against public sources (government agencies, court records, the national press), listed by chapter at the back. It was not written or reviewed by an attorney, which is why it tells you plainly what to take to one.

How does the download work?
